Creativity Is Not a Gift—It’s a Skill You Can Develop

There is a common belief that creativity is something with which only a lucky few are born. People probably say, “I’m just not a creative person.” Creativity is not a gift. It is a skill, and anyone can develop it.

Think of creativity like a muscle. If you never use it, it stays weak. But if you work it out regularly, it grows stronger.

So how do you start training your creative muscle?

  • Expose yourself to new experiences. Creativity is often about connecting unrelated ideas. Read books outside your usual interests. Listen to music from different cultures. Attend events or talks on topics you know nothing about. New input = new ideas.
  • Ask more “what if” questions. Creativity thrives on curiosity. What if meetings were consistently 10 minutes long? What if shoes could charge your phone while you walk? Wild ideas lead to breakthroughs.
  • Create something every day. It doesn’t have to be big. Write a short poem, take a photo, draw a doodle, or brainstorm solutions to everyday problems. Creating, no matter how small, keeps your mind flexible.
  • Don’t fear bad ideas. You need a lot of average or even bad ideas to get to the great ones. Permit yourself to be messy and imperfect. Remember, even the best creators produce flops. They keep going.
  • Surround yourself with inspiration. Follow creatives online. Watch documentaries. Visit art galleries or science museums. Let the brilliance of others fuel your imagination.

Creativity is not a personality trait; it is a daily choice. With practice, patience, and playfulness, you will be surprised at how creative you are.

Start small. Stay curious and keep creating.
